Authenticity & Content Credentials

One of the severe issues of AI in media are the creations of generative AI aka “fake content”. Several initiatives like C2PA (ContentCredentials) try to provide a solution. Other Projects akin are:

  1. Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI): Adobe is a founding member of C2PA, but its CAI predates the coalition. CAI aims to provide a layer of verifiable data to digital content, allowing creators to securely attach attribution information and editing history.
  2. Project Origin: Led by the BBC and other media partners, Project Origin is another alliance similar to C2PA, working to develop a system of digital fingerprints that verify the source of news content.
  3. Truepic: This company specializes in camera technology and software that captures verified images and videos at the point of creation, ensuring that the content has not been manipulated.
  4. Blockchain-based Solutions: Various startups and initiatives are using blockchain technology to create immutable records of content creation and edits, providing a decentralized way to verify authenticity.
  5. IPTC Photo Metadata Standard: The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) has developed standards for embedding metadata in images, which can be used to store information about the creator, copyright, and editing history.
  6. The Trust Project: An international consortium of news organizations aiming to build standards of transparency in journalism to help readers assess the quality and credibility of journalism.
  7. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT): Beyond blockchain, other forms of DLT are being explored for content authentication, providing various ways to maintain secure and transparent records.
  8. WITNESS: This organization works on technology and advocacy to ensure that people can use video and technology to protect and defend human rights. They work on verification and authenticity issues, especially in the context of citizen journalism.
